CEDAR CITY — A Colorado man with several warrants out for his arrest was arrested Saturday night after he fled from police in his car south from Parowan on Interstate 15.

“This originally started with Cedar dispatch putting out an attempt to locate for a vehicle that was driving erratically,” Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jalaine Hawkes said. “A Parowan police officer was actually the first to locate the vehicle.”

The vehicle sped off when the Parowan Police officer attempted to stop it about 9:20 p.m. UHP trooper Adam Gibbs picked up the southbound chase starting at milepost 69, Hawkes said. About milepost 66, Gibbs saw the driver’s side door open.

“Trooper Gibbs saw something drop out onto the highway,” Hawkes said. “The pursuit continued … (and) at milepost 59, one of the Iron Country (Sheriff’s) deputies deployed spikes.”

The two front tires were flattened by the spike strip. The driver, later identified as Nicholas Huner of Sedalia, Colorado, pulled over and stopped, Hawkes said. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Huner had a felony arrest warrant out of Colorado for distributing drugs. He was booked into the Iron County Jail on the outstanding warrant and alleged failure to yield to a peace officer. Other charges are pending, Hawkes said.

“The officers went back to the area where he had dropped something out of the vehicle,” she said. “They found a loaded handgun in the roadway at that area.”

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
