High winds expected across four Southern Utah counties

ST. GEORGE – The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for parts of Washington, Iron, Beaver and Millard counties Sunday from 10 a.m. until midnight.

A strong Pacific storm system will approach Utah Sunday afternoon resulting in strong southwest winds across western Utah valleys from Cedar City northward.

South to southwest winds are expected at 25-35 mph with gusts over 50 mph.

Affected areas

Salt Lake and Tooele Valleys, Great Salt Lake desert and mountains; west central and southwest Utah including Salt Lake City, Tooele, Wendover, Snowville, Delta, Fillmore, Beaver, Cedar City and Milford.

Timing

Winds will increase late Sunday morning and continue through about midnight Sunday night.

Impacts

Strong crosswinds may impact travel especially for high-profile vehicles on Interstate 80 and state routes 6 and 50.

Precautionary/preparedness actions

A wind advisory means that sustained wind speeds of at least 31 mph or gusts of 45 mph are expected. Motorists should be prepared for sudden gusty crosswinds which can make driving difficult.

Weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions to the National Weather Service according to standard operating procedures.
