At approximately 4:23 p.m., Santa Clara-Ivins police responded to a report of a child who had been hit by a silver Toyota minivan near the intersection of Hafen Lane and Swiss Haven Circle in Santa Clara.

Emergency medical services were already on the scene attending to the boy who was responsive and breathing when police arrived, Santa Clara-Ivins Police Sgt. Jaron Studley said.

The toddler was standing in the roadway at the time of the incident and “appeared to have gone under the vehicle or been sideswiped by the side of the vehicle, but there were tire marks on the child,” Studley said.

The child was brought to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George by ambulance for emergency care.

“The driver of the vehicle at this point we believe is a family member and has gone to the hospital with the child,” Studley said.

Charges are unlikely to be pursued, but that decision will be made based on the condition of the child, Studley said.

Crowds gathered around the site of the incident as residents of the area came out to see what was happening.

The incident received a strong response from emergency services and law enforcement including four units from the Santa Clara-Ivins Police Department, a unit from St. George Police Department, Gold Cross Ambulance, Ivins City EMS, Santa Clara Fire and a Utah Highway Patrol trooper.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
