ST. GEORGE — Residents of the Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale, Utah, communities are inviting the public to join them in a memorial service to remember the lives lost one year ago when floodwaters battered two vehicles, killing all but 3 of the 16 women and children inside as they were swept downstream.
The bodies of 12 of the victims were recovered downstream while a 6-year-old boy remains missing and is presumed dead.
First responders and all volunteers from the tragedy will also be honored during the event.
Group songs, lighted candles, a walk to the river, and a roll call of the residents that lost their lives will be a part of this memorial service at Cottonwood Park in Colorado City, Arizona.
A Facebook page announces the event, and residents and others are invited to leave their remembrances of the tragedy on that page.
“This will touch the hearts of so many people, even though the event was such a sad tragedy,” resident George Jessop said. “There has been so much good come from and will continue that may not have come any other way.”
Resident Virginia Barlow remembered the teams that helped in the search.
“We still all appreciate the search and rescue teams who helped! My heart goes out to everyone!”
The memorial will begin at 6 p.m. MST, 7 p.m. MDT, Wednesday. The public is invited to take part.

After school he entered the media as a radio personality, both playing music and reporting news. Ric moved to St. George in the 1980s and was the morning personality on all three major AM stations in town. An avid amateur radio operator, Ric is looking for a good band to play in, as he plays keyboards, bass and guitar.
