ST. GEORGE — A procession of trucks and motorcycles carrying the Vietnam Veteran’s Monument was briefly delayed Friday when the Harley-Davidson three-wheel motorcycle bringing up the rear was involved in a rear end collision.

“The procession of vehicles was escorting the new Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial,” St. George Police officer Lona Trombley said. “The motorcycle trike was the ‘tail-gunner,’ or otherwise the last motorcycle in the procession behind the truck that was carrying the memorial.”

About 11:40 a.m. a truck not in the procession on Red Cliffs Drive in St. George slipped in to the line of vehicles, causing the truck carrying the monument to slow suddenly.

The three-wheel motorcycle was unable to stop in time and ran into the back of the truck.

The driver of the three-wheel motorcycle was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George with hip pain. His rider was unhurt.

The motorcycle was damaged and had to be towed from the scene.

There was no damage to the truck or the monument, which continued on to the ceremony at Zion Harley-Davidson in Washington.

The driver of the motorcycle was cited for following too closely.

The Vietnam Veterans Monument will be unveiled and dedicated at its permanent home at Zion Harley Davidson, 2345 N. Coral Canyon Blvd. in Washington City at 10 a.m. Saturday.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
