‘Walk to support local law enforcement’ is Saturday; wear blue

HURRICANE A “walk to show support for law enforcement” will take place Saturday morning near the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Hurricane.

Everyone is encouraged to come out and show their support for local law enforcement officers by joining in this free community event.

According to walk organizers, the route is about a mile long and children will receive blue balloons and police badges to wear as they walk with family, friends, neighbors and law enforcement. Thank you cards will be provided to sign and everyone is encouraged to wear something blue for the event.

walk to support local law enforcementAll local law enforcement agencies have been invited to attend, with 13 agencies sending representatives so far.

The walk will begin at 9 a.m. on the corner of 5300 West and 750 South near the Washington County Sheriff’s Office building,

The nationwide movement, now in its second year, is held in honor of law enforcement agencies across the country.

The idea behind the walk originated in Houston, Texas, as a result of the homicide of Harris County, Texas, Sheriff’s Deputy Darren Goforth.

Goforth was shot in the back of the head in August of 2015 while filling up his cruiser at a local gas station. Shannon Miles was arrested and accused of shooting Goforth 15 times in retaliation for being a law enforcement officer, and no other reason. Miles was indicted by a Harris County grand jury on a capital murder charge and was found incompetent to stand trial earlier this year, according to HoustonFox16.

Utah police officers killed in the line of duty or while on active duty will be remembered on the walk as well. The Officer Down Memorial Page notes there have been 124 Utah police officers killed and several K9 officers. Of the 19 documented categories of death, 68 law enforcement officers were killed by gunfire, five by vehicle assault and four in an aircraft accident.

Vesting America’s Police K-9s and Tread Armament and Weaponry are sponsoring the local walk. Music for the walk will be provided by Brad Harr and Associates.
