ST. GEORGE – Springville took advantage of Dixie Flyer miscues to blow the game open over the second and third quarters Friday night in a 37-21 victory at Walt Brooks Stadium.

dixie-logoAfter the Flyers knotted the score at 7-7 with a 44-yard TD connection from QB Jacob Barben to receiver Josh Topham, the Red Devils rattled off 17 straight points.

Midway through the third the Dixie pulled to within 10 at 24-14 on a quarterback keeper up the middle by Barben from two yards out.  But the Red Devils responded immediately with a 99-yard kickoff return by speedster Brennen Rymer. On Dixie’s next possession, the ball was fumbled and four plays later Springville was up 37-14.

Dixie had chances late, especially after the Flyers pulled to within two scores on another Barben keeper (from three yards out) with nine minutes remaining. But twice the offense stalled and turned the ball over on downs.

Dixie junior Hobbs Nyberg had 136 yards of total offense, 83 on the ground and 53 through the air.

Malakai Fakahua led Dixie with 13 tackles and a blocked punt on the defense.

Dixie, 0-1, will head to Lone Peak to take on the 5A Knights next Friday night as the start of five consecutive games on the road for the Flyers.
