As of 10:28 a.m. Wednesday, traffic is backed up in the northbound lanes of I-15 from milepost 7 to milepost 13 in the Virgin River Gorge, Arizona Department of Public Safety Sgt. John Bottoms said.

The traffic congestion is due to road construction, Bottoms said.

“To avoid any delays, use old Highway 91,” he added.

Alternate route and tips for drivers

Those seeking to avoid the backup may take Highway 91 as an alternate route.

The highway bypasses the Virgin River Gorge entirely, intersecting with I-15 at Littlefield, Arizona, to the south and connecting to St. George at the north via Santa Clara and Sunset Boulevard. See map included in this article.

Approximately how much longer is the detour, mileage-wise? Thank you.

My computer says an extra eight miles, with an extra 2000 feet elevation gain. I also think there is still road construction on the alternate route to deal with with as well, west of Santa Clara. Maybe not worth it, depending on where in St George you want to go.
