HILDALE – A homemade zipline under construction by a couple of teenage boys did not work as smoothly as the pair hoped during an inaugural ride Monday.

One boy, who became stuck midway along the cable line, was left hanging and had to drop about 20 feet to the ground, Hildale/Colorado City Fire Chief Kevin Barlow said.

“A couple of boys were trying to make a cable trolley,” Barlow said, “and on their test run it didn’t work out all that well. ”

Initially, the technical rescue team was called out, but the operation was quickly scaled back.

Rescuers drove to within a couple hundred yards of the incident and hiked in to the boy’s location. They were able to walk the boy to a vehicle and then drive him a short distance to an ambulance, Barlow said.

The boy had pain in his ankle and was transported to the hospital, mostly as a precaution.

Both boys were young teenagers from the Colorado City/Hildale area, Barlow said.

The incident happened early Monday afternoon in the Indian Box Canyon area, in the foothills near town, directly north of the Subway Restaurant on Utah Avenue, Barlow said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Do they cover the math & engineering required for this type of rig in home school ?
There are science based elements that cover weight / gravity / material strengths etc . . .
Or are they in public schools now ?

Boys will be boys… at least they are outside playing and not inside sitting on their lazy butts playing violent mindless killing video games and eating pizza pockets and gallons of mountain dew.

Right, at least he could walk away from it.
It could have been worse- he could have been the “sparkler kid”.
