Held June 24-25, the throwback event will feature sales throughout the store and prices on ice cream and fountain drinks that haven’t been seen since the 1950s.

A Cedar City staple

Bulloch Drug has been an anchor store on Cedar City’s Main Street since the 1950s. Originally the store had a café with a long soda fountain that took up most of the north wall along with a drug store, according to the store’s history.

The building where Bulloch Drug is located is rich in history as well. Built in 1917, the original store sold dry goods, clothing and other department store merchandise. Upstairs, the building served as Cedar City’s first hospital and was occupied by doctors. In 1934 it became Thornton Drug Store and then Bulloch Drug in 1955.

In 1964, Don and Sylvia Bulloch remodeled the building and took out the café.

Evan and Chris Vickers and their family purchased Bulloch Drug from the Bullochs in 1996 and the Vickers family continues to own and run it today. The family also owns the adjacent stores, The Wood ‘N Lace Place and Comforts of Home, both of which are housed in buildings that have unique histories of their own.

Each of the stores carries items that are one-of-a-kind, human resources manager Kellie Dana said, the kind that can’t be found at just any store on the street.

Soda fountain

One of the things the Vickers family did after purchasing Bulloch Drug was restore the front portion of the store, adding an old-fashioned soda fountain. The soda fountain is a popular draw for both Cedar City residents and tourists alike.

At the soda fountain guests travel back to a simpler time and enjoy the tastes of specialty sodas like Ironport, Fred Adam’s Chocolate Coke, Lime Rickey, Root Beer Freeze, Pink Lady and Cherry Fresh Lime as well as a large selection of ice cream flavors the store typically has between 15 and 18 different flavors of Farr’s Premium Ice Cream available for cones, shakes, banana splits and more.

A candy counter complete with bulk candy, Jelly Belly, penny candy, Fernwood Sweets, Utah Truffles and seasonal candy rounds out the sweet little soda fountain.

“Throwback to the ’50s”

This year will mark the fourth throwback sale for Bulloch Drug, Dana said, and it continues to be a popular event for the store.

“It pays homage to the ’50s when things were relaxed and fun,” Dana said. “We love it.”

The event will be held June 24-25, featuring single scoop ice cream cones for 25 cents, 16-ounce fountain drinks for 15 cents, small bags of popcorn for 15 cents, 25 percent off regular priced in-store items and 75 percent off bargain and clearance items.

Prescriptions are excluded from the sale.

“It is cute and so much fun when you have 100 smiling kids with ice cream, sticky hand and cheeks, having a ball,” Dana said.

Bulloch Drug is located at 91 N. Main Street in Cedar City. The store is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
