ST. GEORGE — A short-lived, early morning fire on a garbage truck brought out St. George Fire Department and blocked a section of Tabernacle Street Tuesday.

Just after 6 a.m., firefighters were sent to Tabernacle Street between 100 East and 200 East in St. George for a possible vehicle fire. What they encountered was a garbage truck that had its cargo of rubbish somehow ignite.

“When we arrived on the scene, the driver of the truck was just preparing to dump the load on the road, which is very typical,” St. George Fire Shift Capt. Dan Cazier said, “because rather have a trash fire on the road than a vehicle fire.”

The trash fire was quickly put out by firefighters while St. George Police blocked traffic access to the area.

The cause of the fire is unknown, Cazier said. No injuries were reported in connection with the fire.

The garbage truck largely appeared to be undamaged and drove away from the smoldering mess.

St. George Fire Department responded with two firetrucks and eight firefighters.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
