CEDAR CITY — For 30 years, athletes from around the state have descended on southern Utah to compete in the Utah Summer Games and this year is no different.

1usgThough the official Opening Ceremonies aren’t until next Thursday, the games got underway in a big way this weekend, with the first groups of what is expected to be more than 9,000 athletes competing in events such as tennis, bowling, horseshoes, karate and tae kwan do, pistol shooting, basketball and even moto-trials.

Out at the Cross Hollow Equestrian Club, competitors and their equine friends battled it out in the equestrian events Friday and Saturday.

St. George News photographer Shelly Griffin captured some of the action at Cross Hollow and brings us this photo gallery.

The Utah Summer Games continue through June 18. Some of next week’s upcoming events include swimming, water polo, racquetball, pickleball (in Little Valley), gymnastics, disc golf and a 5K and 10K run.

The Opening Ceremonies are Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. at Southern Utah University’s Eccles Coliseum.
