Prep softball: Snow Canyon, Cedar still alive with rebound wins to end day

TAYLORSVILLE – The last two Region 9 teams stayed alive after both suffered their first losses earlier in the day. Both teams were knocked to the one-loss bracket and staved off elimination. Below are summaries of the games played Thursday:

Championship bracket

Stansbury 4, Snow Canyon 0

The Lady Stallions stymied the Snow Canyon hitting en route to a 4-0 victory in the 3A Utah State softball quarterfinals Thursday. The game was scoreless until the fourth inning. Stansbury put up three runs in the fourth and the fifth, then added a final insurance run in the seventh. Snow Canyon’s Sonya Hardy had multiple hits, but the Lady Warriors could only manage four total for the game. Heather Prestwich pitched the entire game for Snow Canyon, giving up the four runs on seven hits and five walks. It was Snow Canyon’s first loss and dropped the Warriors to the one-loss bracket where they played North Sanpete.

Grantsville 13, Cedar City 2

The Lady Reds fell to Region 10 champion Grantsville. “We had 11 errors in the game,” said Cedar head coach Chris Weaver. “We had 30-mile winds during the game. It affected everybody, but we did not handle it well.”

Allie Meisner was injured and removed from the game with a possible concussion on a collision with the opposing catcher while scoring Cedar’s first run. Cedar moved to the one-loss bracket where they met Carbon.

One-Loss Bracket Games

Snow Canyon 3, North Sanpete 0

The Lady Warriors survived their first elimination game by beating North Sanpete from Region 12. Shortstop Brittany Reyes hit a two-run single that completed a three-run inning and gave the Lady Warriors all they needed to get the victory. Heather Prestwich pitched a shutout, allowing five hits and striking out eight. The Lady Warriors will face Tooele from Region 10 at 10 a.m. today.

Cedar City 2, Carbon 1

The Lady Reds rebounded from their earlier loss in the day to beat Carbon from Region 12, 2-1. “Bryton (Holyoak) again pitched well,” said Weaver. “She had eight strikeouts and had a shutout going into the final inning.”

Hannah Williams batted in both runs. She knocked in Abby Anderson in the first inning then hit a solo shot in the fourth for the early 2-0 lead. The Lady Reds will face Logan from Region 11 today at 10 a.m. After missing the Carbon game, Allie Meisner was taken to the doctor where she was cleared to play.
