The Space Between Theatre Company presents ‘RED’ by John Logan

ST. GEORGE — The Space Between Theatre Company continues its mission of creating dynamic, non-traditional theater as they present John Logan’s “RED”, at the Roene B. DiFiore Center For Arts and Education in downtown St. George.

RED was the winner of seven 2010 Tony Awards, including the award for Best Play.

About RED

Set in 1958, Mark Rothko, master abstract expressionist, has taken on the biggest commission in the history of modern art — to paint a series of murals for the famous Four Seasons Restaurant in New York. Standing in his downtown studio, staring at his work, he asks his newly acquired assistant, Ken, “What do you see?” Two years unfold as Rothko and Ken continue to work on what will be either his greatest accomplishment or his most profound failure as an artist. RED investigates the relationships between artists and audiences, fathers and sons, servants and masters, teachers and students, and it asks each of us to look inward and find what pulses and moves within us. RED excavates the soul of an artist as it questions the nature of what art is and what it should be. It begs us to be raw, vulnerable and kind and it demands that we “make something new.”

RED is directed by Kelly Thomas, assisted by Jacob Beecher, and will feature Varlo Davenport and Jesse Nepivoda.

“We’re very excited to be bringing RED to life here in Washington County,” Nepivoda said. “It’s a show that wrestles with big questions — what’s important to us? What truly matters? What do we want to leave behind when we’re gone?”

The Space Between Theater Company also plans to further involve the Washington County community by offering a series of lectures before selected shows on art, abstract expressionism, and the world of Mark Rothko. Those nights and the featured lectures will be announced at a later date.
