Boy Scout seeks public input on best types of dance, even if ‘none’

ST. GEORGE — What would you say to a Boy Scout with an interest in dancing?

St. George News was recently contacted by Boy Scout Troop 1827 member Heath Apple as part of his communications merit badge, asking for reader input on what they believe to be the best type of dance. Given the perception of many that the City of St. George is opposed to dancing, “none” will also be an acceptable response.

St. George News confirmed that Apple is not, in fact, doing market research with the idea of opening a new dance club in St. George or seeking to somehow circumvent the special event permit process, although if reader comments on previous stories regarding the dance controversy in St. George are any indicator, he might have considerable support should he ever pursue the dance club venture.

Apple contacted St. George News through John Bottoms, the charter organizational representative for Troop 1827. Bottoms might be more familiar to St. George News readers as “Sgt. Bottoms of the Arizona Department of Public Safety,” the highway patrol officer who frequently keeps readers informed of traffic conditions and safety concerns in the Virgin River Gorge.

While Sgt. Bottoms said he appreciates any input readers can provide for Apple, St. George participants won’t necessarily get preferential treatment if they are caught breaking the special event permit ordinance. That’s not even his jurisdiction. However, he said he might be able to show you a super-secret route through the Virgin River Gorge during the next traffic backup. (See reporter’s note.)

Any readers willing to help Apple with the poll should comment on this article or email responses of what they believe to be the best type of dance to [email protected]. Please put “DANCE” in the subject line. Responses will be forwarded to Apple. Please feel free to elaborate on why you chose that particular dance style; however, save commentary on dancing in St. George in general or other political matters for a letter to the editor – letters are always welcome.

Reporter’s note: There is no super-secret route through the Gorge. Just start using Highway 91 on the weekends.
