ST. GEORGE — A St. George resident arrived home Wednesday to find a portion of his house on fire.
At approximately 4 p.m., firefighters responded to a structure fire in the area of 900 South and 900 East where a resident reported there was a fire in his garage and in the attic space of his home, St. George Fire Battalion Chief Robert Hooper said.
“He arrived home and heard some cracking and popping and saw some smoke,” Hooper said, “at which point, he called 911.”
Six engines, one squad, one ladder truck and 35 firefighters responded to the scene, Hooper said. Upon arrival, fire crews saw smoke coming from an exhaust fan in the attic space.
“You can never be too safe with these even though it was small,” Hooper said. “Once the fire does get into the attic, it can get quite large and it’s hard to get in front of those sometimes.”
Firefighters were able to quickly knock out the fire in about 15 minutes before spending about another half hour making sure the fire was completely out of the insulation and the walls.
The cause of the fire appeared to have come from a ventilation fan in the attic, Hooper said, causing an estimated damage of about $10,000 to the home.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. A portion of the block was closed as fire units tended to the scene.
In addition to St. George Fire, St. George Police and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the scene.
