ST. GEORGE — It took three days, but two Region 9 games are finally finished as Pine View finished off Dixie and Cedar upset Desert Hills Monday night. The games were both suspended in the fourth inning due to lightning and rain Friday night, but sunny skies and dry air greeted the teams in Monday’s completions.

Pine View 10, Dixie 2

Brooks Barney was the hero Friday night, knocking in three runs and pitching the Panthers to a 7-1 lead. Cole Green then finished the game for Pine View Monday night, pitching four innings and allowing no earned runs as PV salvaged a split in the series with the Flyers.

“This was crucial, huge,” said Panther catcher Jackson Bithell. “Especially going into the last week of the season, we needed this win to help propel us forward.”

Dixie had beaten Pine View 2-0 in the first game of the series, which took place last Thursday. The Panthers were hoping to make up ground against Desert Hills by returning the favor against the Flyers and after no runs and one hit on Tuesday, this game was all about the Pine View offense.

“This was huge, mainly for our self-confidence,” said Panther head coach Troy Wall. “That first game, Tyson Fisher threw extremely well. Our kids were maybe a little too confident coming into it, but mainly Tyson just threw well.”

In the game completed Monday, the Panthers finished with 11 hits, five of those for extra bases, including triples by Logan Lafemina and Bithell. Dixie also helped the Pine View cause with three errors, six walks and three wild pitches.

It was 1-1 through two innings with the Panthers getting an RBI from Lafemina and Dixie picking one up from Payden Harrah.

The Panthers grabbed the lead for good by bringing home four runs in the top of the third. Pine View had five consecutive hits, with a single by Dakota Donovan, an RBI double by Barney, an RBI single by Tyler Johnston, a run-scoring triple by Bithell and an RBI single by Green.

With the rain starting to fall Friday, Pine View added two more in the top of the fourth, with barney doubling home Donovan and Clark before the game was suspended.

Dixie pulled to within 7-2 in Monday night’s fifth inning as Dayton Dempsey scored on a wild pitch. But Pine View answered with three runs in the top of the sixth to salt the game away. All three runs were unearned, though Bithell did pick up another RBI.

The win wins Pine View is back in a tie with Desert Hills heading into the final two-games of the season. The Panthers (6-2 in region) play at Desert Hills Tuesday night and then host the Thunder at Panther Field Friday.

“It was really important to play well today,” Green said. “We didn’t get to practice today, so this was good practice, just like live BP (batting practice).”

Dixie is still in third place, but misses out on clinching a playoff spot with the loss. The Flyers, 4-4 in region, battle Snow Canyon in the final series of the regular season. The Warriors, who visit Flyer Field Tuesday night, are one game behind Dixie at 3-5 and tied with Hurricane. A split with the Warriors would guarantee the Flyers a playoff spot.

Cedar 10, Desert Hills 9

At Hurst Field, the weather was crazy, but this game was even crazier as the Thunder rallied from an 8-4 deficit to take a 9-8 lead in the top of the seventh. But the Redmen manufactured a pair of runs to walk off with the emotional win.

Desert Hills outscored Cedar 5-1 after the rain delay, including the go-ahead run on a Bo Barben RBI single with two outs in the top of the seventh — until the bottom of the last inning. That’s when the Redmen put together a rally that may have been a season-saver for a team that played in the state championship a year ago.

Ryan Slack started the bottom of the seventh by taking one for the team. After getting hit by a pitch, he went to second on an error by the pitcher and then Jaden Hulet set the Redmen up for the win by reaching on a sac bunt that was booted by the Thunder.

After a strikeout, Cedar’s Brandon Johnson tied the game with a single to center field that brought home Slack and made it 9-9. The game then ended excruciatingly for Desert Hills as batter Bracken Yardley watched a ball get past the catcher and bring home pinch runenr McClain Anderson with the winning run.

Cedar had eight hits, plus took advantage of five D-Hills walks and three Thunder errors. Rykker Tim had two hits and Trey Esplin and Hulet each scored twice for Cedar.

And it was a must-win for the Redmen (2-6 in region), who are still in sixth place, but are just a game behind Hurricane and Snow Canyon for that coveted fourth spot and a trip to the 3A playoffs. Cedar closes the year with a two-game set against the Tigers beginning tonight in Hurricane.

The Thunder had 13 hits, but left eight men on base. Trey Winget was 3 for 5 and Chad Nelson and Trey Allred had two hits each. nelson tripled and DH ran the bases well with Allred stealing three bags and Winget swiping two.

Desert Hills is tied for first after the loss (6-2 in region) and will battle Pine View this week for the region title. Tonight’s game is at Thunder Field and then Friday’s contest is at PV.
