WASHINGTON COUNTY — A teenage driver from Colorado trying to get to California rolled her car on Interstate 15 at milepost 34, just north of the Ranch Exit for Snowfield, Sunday morning.
The teen, who was not identified because of her age, had been reported as a runaway, and was apparently trying to get to her father’s home in California, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Brian Lacy said.
“This black Ford Focus was traveling southbound on I-15 (about 7:30 a.m.),” Lacy said, “It was coming from Colorado heading to California, I believe. … It looks like possibly she fell asleep. She ended up crossing the median, the vehicle rolled, and she ended up in the northbound Number 1 lane.”
The teen had been reported missing Saturday night by her mother. The teen was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George with minor injuries, including hand lacerations. Lacy said she apparently was wearing her seat belt, and airbags deployed in the Ford Focus.
Troopers notified the teen’s mother in Colorado of the crash.
Units from the Utah Highway Patrol, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Hurricane Fire and Rescue, Leeds Fire and Rescue, and Utah Department of Transportation responded to the wreck.
