CEDAR CITY — Two Cedar City residents were transported to the hospital for injuries Sunday after Cedar City firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free the driver from his 2006 Ford Ranger. The passenger also required extraction from the vehicle.

The male driver and his female passenger were heading north toward Cedar City on Tipple Road on their way home from the Kanarraville area when the driver overcorrected after veering to the right, Iron County Sheriff’s Lt. Del Schlosser said. The call to respond came in at around 7:45 p.m. from the Cedar Communications Center.

“The truck spun around and was actually facing south when it came to a rest,” Schlosser said, adding that it also rolled three-quarters of a turn and landed on its driver’s side door. “Speed was a factor in this incident.”

The Cedar City Fire Department was the first on the scene, said Cedar City Fire Chief Mike Phillips. When they arrived, the Ranger was on the driver’s side door and unstable, he said, so the first thing they did was pull it back onto its wheels to stabilize it.

“The female victim, we cut out the windshield and she was able to walk out,” he said, “and then for the guy, we had to cut the roof off of the vehicle.”

Both occupants were transported to Valley View Medical Center by Gold Cross Ambulance, Schlosser said. The woman’s injuries were classified as minor and the driver’s as non-life threatening, he said.

Kanarraville Fire Department assisted on the scene.
