ST. GEORGE — The roar of 6-horsepower Subaru engines will fill the Ridge Top Complex Friday as the SkyWest Airlines “Mini Indy” drives into town. More than 45 businesses and teams from around the world will be racing throughout the day hoping to claim the coveted Grand Champion trophy.

The “Mini Indy” is sponsored by SkyWest Inc. and the City of St. George, with all proceeds from the sponsor’s contributions benefiting United Way Dixie. According to the event website, since the event started, almost $1 million dollars has been raised for local charities.

“What started with just a few go-karts 16 years ago has now grown into an incredible competition to give back to our people and the community,” SkyWest Airlines Chief Operations Officer Mike Thompson said. “We have great support from teams locally and around the world, and we’re looking forward to seeing them back on the race track.”

Time trials are Thursday, and the starter’s flag will drop on Friday at 10 a.m. sharp. Each of the teams will then compete in a series of heats throughout the day in identical cars made by Promo Karts of Illinois and painted by each participant group.

The event is free for spectators to attend, but attendees should note that this event is geared more toward sponsors. There will be seating and portable restroom facilities; however, there will be no food concessions at the event.

To view the racing action, visitors can park in the old terminal building parking lot located at the Ridge Top Complex and go through the gate to the grandstand seating area.

Ric, your Mini Indy article incorrectly states, “The roar of 6-horsepower Subaru engines will fill the Ridge Top Complex Saturday” but then shows Event Details: “When: Friday, March 18, 10 a.m.”. The Mini-Indy website shows the race to be “Friday, March 18th, 10:00am at “Ridgetop Raceway”. We Just don’t want people to show up at the old airport on Saturday and be disappointed to find out the race was held the day before.
