Arlene Braithwaite has been awarded with the Purchase Prize for her pastel “Canyon Dawn.” The Purchase Prize is chosen by a committee after the show is hung, and the winning artwork is purchased through donated funds and becomes part of the Dixie State University’s permanent art collection.

The winner of the Purchase Prize receives a special ribbon and is invited to present the symposium at the subsequent year’s gala. The winner also becomes the adjudicator to choose the ribbon placement the following year.

Braithwaite said:

My work is inspired by the land around me, a subject I find continually changing, challenging and rich with catalysts for composition. Pastel is attractive to me because of its immediacy. I enjoy direct contact with the pigment and the bold to subtle hue mixtures that can be achieved through the hatching and layering of pastel. Each painting I do provides me with the opportunity of manipulating color, shape and edge to interpret reality in a hopefully unique way.

Annette Everett won the Best of Show award for her piece “In the Garden.”

Recognized as one of the biggest art events in Utah, this year’s Sears Dixie Invitational features approximately 220 works from 120 renowned artists, many of whom are nationally known and have earned many prestigious awards.

Conceived as a way to fund the preservation of the arts on the Dixie State campus, the annual event is the only fundraiser held each year in support of the university’s Sears Art Museum Gallery. Over the event’s 29-year history, almost 1,300 works of art have been sold. This year’s show still has many works of art for sale.

All works on display are done in traditional realism style and range from photo-realism to stylized works. Media on display include bronze, ceramic, watercolor, mixed media, oil and pastel created by artists from all over the U.S., including several well-known Utah artists. Artists are invited by other Invitational artists to apply for the exhibit. The application process includes an artist resume, artist statement and artist bio, plus images of 6-8 pieces of their art.
