Chartway Federal Credit Union announces newly-elected directors

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Chartway Federal Credit Union, one of the largest credit unions in the country, according to its news release, with divisions, HeritageWest and SouthWest Community credit unions, in both Southern Utah and southern Nevada, held its 57th annual meeting at its Corporate Headquarters in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Feb. 18, during which three members were elected to the institution’s board of directors.

The board members elected by acclamation are as follows:

Robert “Bob” Holmes was re-elected to a three-year term. He joined Chartway as member in 1965. He has been a volunteer since 1998 and a member of the board since 2006.  During this time, he has contributed to the following committees:human resources, asset/liability management, directors scholarship, legislative/regulatory and advocacy, new services, technology, nominating, pension investment and elections.

Holmes has also participated in the credit union’s “Volunteer Advanced Training Program.” He is a retired commander with 35 years in the Naval Reserve and is a Vietnam-era veteran. Bob also served as the civilian personnel director of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, serving a population of 8,500 employees, from which he retired in 2004 after 41 years of federal service.

Melvin Mizelle was re-elected to a three-year term: 2016 marks 33 years of volunteer service with Chartway, including a term as chairman of the board from 1997 to 2001. He has also served as treasurer of the board and served or chaired a number of committees, including the asset/liability management committee and legislative/regulatory committee

Mizelle retired as deputy director of human resources department at the Naval Aviation Depot in Norfolk, Virginia, after 37 years of continuous service.

Judy Sparrow was re-elected to a three-year term: She is a seasoned leader who has held a variety of volunteer positions at the credit union for more than 20 years. She has been a member of the board since 2006 and has served in a variety of roles, including a term as chairman from 2010 to 2013, first vice chairman, and second vice chairman of the board.

Sparrow has also served on many committees, including the supervisory, alm, legislative/regulatory and advocacy, human resource, and pension investment committees. She also participates as chairman of Chartway’s “Volunteer Advanced Training and Leadership Program.” In addition to her credit union duties, Sparrow is active with the American Cancer Foundation and the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation.

Following the Annual Meeting, the board of directors held an organizational meeting – during which time, the following slate of officials was established:

  • Robert Holmes – chairman of the board
  • Wayne Foshay – first vice chairman
  • George Sauer – second vice chairman
  • Melvin Mizelle – treasurer
  • L. “Lou” Gull Jr. – secretary

Since first opening its doors for business, the company’s news release said, Chartway and its divisions of HeritageWest and SouthWest Community credit unions have served its members and enriched the communities in which the organization operates – providing strength, stability and smart solutions, including online, mobile and telephone banking.
