Girls basketball: Playoffs begin tonight as 3A teams chase state title

The 2015-16 3A girls basketball playoffs begin tonight with first-round games around the state.

Region 9 champion Snow Canyon is expected to win at home against Park City in what is usually a lopsided No. 1 vs. No. 4 meeting. But the Lady Warriors aren’t the only southern Utah team expected to do well. Cedar is favored at home against Grantsville and Desert Hills should have an excellent chance on the road against Stansbury. That leaves No. 4 seed Pine View, which should not be intimidated against a very average Union team, although Roosevelt is a long ways away.

Here’s a glance at each team:

UPPER BRACKET

Shaylee Reed, Sr.,(11.4 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.8 spg)

Nikenna Durante, Sr.,(6.1 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.9 apg, 2.3 spg)

Scoring offense: 55.0 ppg (3rd in 3A)
Scoring defense: 43.4 ppg (7th in 3A)
STGNews predicted finish: State champions

Two offensive teams square off in the first round. Not a gimme for the top-seeded team in the upper bracket. The Lady Miners should go down easily. Mooring has had a week to heal and Snow Canyon has not lost at home this year. Prediction: Snow Canyon

pine-view-logounion-smPine View @ Union (Tonight, 7 p.m.)

Pine View Panthers (12-9)
Coach: Chris Brinagh
How qualified: Fourth in Region 9 with 4-6 record

STGNews predicted finish: Loss in quarterfinals to Morgan

Union Cougars (11-9)
Coach: Sam Hoopes
How qualified: Tied for first in Region 10 with 6-2 record
Record against the field: 4-6
Top contributors
Shayla Draper (13.6 ppg)
Katie Ross (6.2 ppg)

Alyssa Burgie (4.4 ppg)
Scoring offense: 52.6 ppg (6th in 3A)
Scoring defense: 52.3 ppg (20th in 3A)
STGNews predicted finish: Loss in first round to Pine View

With point guard Claire Newby back from injury and able to shake some rust off the last few games of the season, Pine View has an opportunity to make some noise. Union won the coin toss to get the first seed but that may have not been a good thing. Pine View has experience, talent and the Panthers are hungry. Prediction: Pine View

richfield-logologanRichfield @ Logan (Tonight, 6 p.m.)

Richfield Wildcats (12-8)

Saranie Brown, Sr. (4.6 ppg)
Scoring offense: 51.4 ppg (8th in 3A)
Scoring defense: 41.0 ppg (3rd in 3A)
STGNews predicted finish: Loss in quarterfinals to Snow Canyon

Richfield packed its preregion schedule against top talent. The Lady Wildcats are better than their record indicates. Logan should win, but this will be one of the better matchups of the first round. Prediction: Logan

morgan-smjuab-smMorgan @ Juab (Tonight, 7 p.m.)

Morgan Trojans (15-4)

Coach: Kade Morrell
How qualified: Third in Region 11 with 5-3 record

Autumn Kay, Sr. (10.8 ppg, 5 rpg, 2.2 apg, 2 spg)
Hannah Robins, Fr. (10.7 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1.1 spg)
Taylei Williams, Jr. (4.4ppg, 3 rpg, 2 apg)
Scoring offense: 45.3 ppg (14th in 3A)
Scoring defense: 42.2 ppg (4th in 3A)
STGNews predicted finish: Loss in first round to Morgan

This will not be a close game. Juab did beat tournament favorite Snow Canyon early in the year, but Morgan has been consistent against tough competition and has a much better resume. Prediction: Morgan

LOWER BRACKET

desert-hills-logostansbury-smDesert Hills @ Stansbury (Tonight, 6:00 p.m.)

Desert Hills Thunder (11-10)

Coach: Ron Denos
How qualified: Third in Region 9 with a 6-4 record

Stansbury Stallions (13-9)

Coach: Kenzie Newton
How qualified: Tied first in Region 10 with 6-2 record
Record against the field: 6-6
Top contributors
Angie Kilpack, Sr.,(10.3 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.7 spg)
Deanna Castillo, Jr.,(8.9 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.2spg)
Amber Spaulding, Sr.,(8.8 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.6 spg)
Katrina Flint, Sr., (7.4 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 1.6 spg)
Scoring offense: 47.1 ppg (12th in 3A)
Scoring defense: 45.3 ppg (12th in 3A)
STGNews predicted finish: Loss in first round to Desert Hills

If the Lady Thunder play as capably as they can, they should win. Beckstrand is by far the best player in the tournament, but Desert Hills struggles if she does not involve her teammates in the offense. The Thunder supporting cast is better than the numbers would indicate. The winner of this game has a very good chance of getting to the semifinals. Prediction: Desert Hills

grantsville-bgcedar-logoGrantsville @ Cedar (Tonight, 7 p.m.)

Grantsville Cowboys (9-13)

Coach: Megan Vera
How qualified: Tied for third in Region 10 with 3-5 record

STGNews predicted finish: Loss in first round to Cedar

Cedar Redmen (17-5)

Coach: John Elison
How qualified: Second in Region 9 with 8-2 record
Record against the field: 7-2
Top contributors
Courtney Morley, Sr.,(13.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.5 spg)
Jessica Whetman, Sr., (7.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg)
Dream Weaver, So.,(6.6 ppg, 2 rpg)
Carly Davis, So.,(6.3 ppg, 2.3 rpg)
Morgan Myers, Jr., (5.2 ppg, 2.4 rpg)
Scoring offense: 53.5 ppg (4th in 3A)
Scoring defense: 44.3 ppg (9th in 3A)
STGNews predicted finish: Loss in championship game to Snow Canyon

Region 9 should sweep their first-round opponents. Cedar is arguably the most talented and was the preseason pick to win its region. After some early stumbles the Lady Reds have rebounded and have played their best ball. It is likely they will get to the final game. Prediction: Cedar

north-sanpete-smjuan-diego-logoNorth Sanpete @ Juan Diego (Tonight, 7 p.m.)

North Sanpete Hawks (7-14)

Coach: Randi Griffith

Juan Diego Soaring Eagle (14-5)

Coach: Josh Archuleta
How qualified: First in Region 11 with 7-1 record
Record against the field: 6-3
Top contributors
Becca Curran, Jr. (16.8 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.7 apg, 3 spg)
AnnMarie Nelson, Sr., C/F (11.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 1.5 spg)
Brynn Drummond, Jr., G/F (9.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.3 spg)
Mia Berenguer, Sr. (7.3 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 3 apg, 1.7 spg)
Scoring offense: 55.3 ppg (2nd in 3A)
Scoring defense: 48.6 ppg (16th in 3A)
STGNews predicted finish: Loss in quarterfinals to Cedar

Probably the most lopsided first-round matchup. The returning champion, Juan Diego, should run away with this one. How far they go may depend on its temperamental coach. Key technical fouls late in games cost them earlier in the year against teams like Snow Canyon. Prediction: Juan Diego

bear-river-smcarbon-smBear River @ Carbon (Tonight, 7 p.m.)

Bear River Bears (10-11)

Coach: Ken Oxborrow (1st year)
How qualified: Fourth in Region 11 with 2-6 record

Jenny Bitner, Sr. (6.8 ppg)
Arianna Towne, Jr. (6.2 ppg)

Scoring offense: 44.8 ppg (15th in 3A)
Scoring defense: 44.7 ppg (10th in 3A)
STGNews predicted finish: Loss in first round to Carbon

Carbon Dinos (20-2)

Coach: Ted Bianco
How qualified: First in Region 12 with 7-1 record
Record against the field: 7-1
Top contributors
Lindsay Blanc, Jr., Guard (12.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.7 apg, 3.6 spg)
Sara Morley, Sr., Forward (11.4 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 1.1 spg)
Morgan Hillam, Sr., Forward (5.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1 spg)
Scoring offense: 50.7 ppg (9th in 3A)
Scoring defense: 37.1 ppg (1st in 3A)
STGNews predicted finish: Loss in semifinals to Cedar

The Lady Dinos have an impressive record but their strength of schedule was not formidable. They did not play any contending 3A teams this year. They should win their first-round matchup, but beyond that they will finally face competition they have not seen this year. Prediction: Carbon
