OPINION — My Love,
I’d like you to think I hand-wrote this letter to you on a beach as I was peacefully listening to the waves break and ebb away.
But I’m actually typing this as you are sound asleep right next to me. And by sound, I mean snoring – really loudly. Also, FYI, my battery life is low on my laptop and I have no idea where we put the charger. So that’s good.
Needless to say, this isn’t the perfect love letter. It’s actually more of an imperfect thank-you letter.
That being said,
Thank you for choosing me.
Not just once, but every single day. Thank you for choosing me even when there are millions of other choices.
Thank you for being my emergency contact.
Not only on my medical forms, but also on our cellphone records. Thank you for usually answering your phone in emergency situations.
You’ll always be my first phone call, whether it’s the best or worst news. (Or if it’s my one free phone call.)
Thank you for letting me be me.
The me that has good days and bad days. The me that isn’t a morning person. And the me that doesn’t always have things figured out.
Thank you for being you.
The you that is the most loyal human I’ve ever known. The you that wakes up extra early just to make the most out of every day.
The guitar-playing-star-gazing-you that has the drive to excel at absolutely anything you love.
Thank you for being a Broncos fan.
It shows how intelligent you are. And that you have impeccable taste.
And for letting me name our dog Elway. Even though I told you we had to name him that or else our first child would be named Elway.
For the record, I never would have really named our child Elway.
Thank you for being my person.
The person who drives me to the grocery store at 11 p.m. just so we can get chocolate chip cookie dough. The person who makes every day an adventure.
The person that I can’t imagine doing any part of this crazy life without.
Thank you for always listening to talk radio.
It has made me so much smarter.
There are a few new songs on the other radio, though, that I would love to catch you up on sometime really soon.
Thank you for always liking my photo on Instagram.
(But seriously – thank you.)
Thank you for never giving up on me.
For forgiving me quickly, even when I’m quick to make the same mistakes over and over again.
And most of all,
Thank you for loving imperfect me.
This imperfect life with you is wonderful.
I’m so happy I get to love you forever.
