Shots fired, 1 killed in arrest of Oregon militants

Highway 395 is blocked at Seneca between John Day and Burns, Ore., by Oregon State police officers the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016. A more than 50-mile stretch of highway in Oregon has been closed near where an armed group has been occupying a national wildlife refuge. A group led by Ammon Bundy seized the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge south of Burns on Jan. 2 as part of a long-running dispute over public lands in the West. (AP) — The Oregonian newspaper has reported Oregon standoff spokesman Robert “LaVoy” Finicum has been killed and other leaders of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge occupation were arrested Tuesday after the FBI and state police stopped vehicles about 20 miles north of Burns.

Authorities did not release the name of the person who died at the highway stop, but two sources told The Oregonian/Oregonlive that it was Finicum, 55, of Cane Beds, Arizona, one of the cowboy-hat wearing faces of the takeover.

Finicum’s daughter, Arianna Finicum Brown, also said police confirmed to her mother that he had died.

Ryan Bundy, 43, of Bunkerville, Nev., suffered a minor gunshot wound in the confrontation at 4:30 p.m. along U.S. 395. He was treated and released from a local hospital and was in FBI custody, authorities said.

The FBI on Tuesday arrested the leaders of an armed group that has occupied a national wildlife refuge in Oregon for the past three weeks, conducting a traffic stop that prompted gunfire — and one death — along a highway through the frozen high country.

Militant leader Ammon Bundy and his followers were reportedly heading to a community meeting at the senior center in John Day, a Grant County town about 70 miles north of Burns, to address local residents to discuss their views on federal management of public lands.

The Oregonian newspaper reported several hundred people had gathered at the John Day Senior Center on Tuesday evening and were told the “guest speakers” would not be appearing.

In a statement, the FBI and Oregon State Police said agents had made six arrests: Bundy, 40; his brother Ryan Bundy, 43; Brian Cavalier, 44; Shawna Cox, 59; and Ryan Payne, 32, during a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 395 Tuesday afternoon. Authorities said another person, Joseph Donald O’Shaughnessy, 45, was arrested in Burns.

One of those arrested suffered non-life-threatening wounds after shots were fired and was treated at a hospital, the agencies said. Another individual “who was a subject of a federal probable cause arrest is deceased,” they said. The agencies said they would not release further information about the death pending identification by the medical examiner.

Ammon Bundy’s group, which has included people from as far away as Arizona and Michigan, seized the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge on Jan. 2 as part of a long-running dispute over public lands in the West. It was unclear how many people remained in the buildings Tuesday night.

The confrontation came amid increasing calls for law enforcement to take action against Bundy for the illegal occupation of the wildlife refuge. Many residents of Harney County, where the refuge is located, have been among those demanding that Bundy leave. Many sympathize with his criticism of federal land management policies of public lands but opposed the refuge takeover. They feared violence could erupt.

Ammon Bundy recently had begun traveling into Grant County to try to drum up more sympathy for his cause.

The Bundys are the sons of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who was involved in a high-profile 2014 standoff with the government over grazing rights.

The FBI said the people arrested Tuesday face a federal felony charge of conspiracy to impede officers of the United States from discharging their official duties through the use of force, intimidation or threats. No indictments or federal charging documents had been made public.

Federal law enforcement officers converged on the wildlife refuge after the arrests and were expected to remain at the site throughout the night. It was unclear how many members of the armed group, if any, were at the refuge when the law enforcement officers arrived.

The militants, calling themselves Citizens for Constitutional Freedom, came to the frozen high desert of eastern Oregon to decry what it calls onerous federal land restrictions and to object to the prison sentences of two local ranchers convicted of setting fires.

Specifically, the group wanted federal lands turned over to local authorities. The U.S. government controls about half of all land in the West.

heck yea, these clowns are gonna do some serious and well deserved prison time. didn’t think they were stupid enough to fire at feds or cops though. Hey Brian hyde i hope you’re proud of your clown friends now… aint u glad u didn’t join them?

    • Chris January 27, 2016 at 9:03 am

Hyde would never have joined them. Bryan is just a talker, not a doer.

true. hyde, i have noticed, doesn’t even keep true to a particular ideology, so much as he just idolizes these redneck gun-toting idiots he considers his friends.

So she was in the car, saw everything and witnessed law enforcement KILL A MAN in cold blood but WASN”T ARRESTED?? Sounds fishy to me.

Not to mention that she was, apparently, the ONLY ONE in the car that wasn’t ARRESTED or KILLED? Sounds fishy to me.

Also, how would that many people (it is my understanding that there were at least 5 others) in a car that according to her “..was completely covered with gunshots” manage to escape injury? Again….sounds fishy to me.

Call me what you will but I don’t think she’s telling the truth.

Sorry Accountable but, as usual, you are going to have to cite a better source then the Youtube account of “Imma Reporter”.

          • Susan January 28, 2016 at 2:50 am

Why would she be arrested? I don’t think “witnessed law enforcement KILL A MAN in cold blood” are grounds for arrest
Sounds like you just wanted everybody Dead or in Jail. If you searched for facts you would know that she was not a part of the group that seized the Refuge so she hadn’t broken any law. The guy driving the jeep that Ammon was in and 1 other person were also not arrested, for a total of 3 who were not arrested. FACT.

          • Rainbow Dash January 28, 2016 at 8:28 am

Susan look at something other then “Imma Reporter’s” youtube page. The TERRORIST on the phone in that video admitted that she was IN THE CAR with Ryan and Ammon. Yes, that makes her part of the TERRORIST group that seized the refuge. The guy driving the car that she was in the one TERRORIST who was truly willing to die for this “cause”. If you ask me, he did the world a favor when he charged those officers. Do you actually believe that if the government killed a man in cold blood that they would simply let an EYE WITNESS go?

          • Rainbow Dash January 29, 2016 at 8:23 am

Ok so the video from the LEOS perspective has been released and while it doesn’t show Funicum charging the officers it does show him going for a gun on his waistband. What it does not show is the Feds riddling the car with hundreds of bullets and other such outlandish claims made by that woman in that video Accountable posted above.

Ever since the first Bundy roundup, I’m sure the FBI has a long case on Cliven too. Hopefully the insanity ends soon!

When you play with guns someone gets hurt. Bundy and his cowboy “activists” felt the need to be armed as some type of militant show of civil disobedience. When the dust settled, they lost the gun fight.

The people of Oregon who’ve struggled with this craziness for the last month are happy to see that the Bundy brothers and many of the other “leaders” have finally been arrested. Sad that someone had to get killed, but of course, if Finicum had been at home where he belonged instead of helping lead an invasion in Oregon, he’d be alive now, too. Headed to prison, but alive. The people in Harney County whose lives have been turned upside down by these criminals can perhaps now have a chance to begin putting those lives back together. The people of Oregon hope that the rest of the criminals still at the Wildlife Refuge will be routed now that the leaders have gone. These criminals have been told they can and should leave. If they’re smart they will. But “smart” was not really part of this exercise.

    • Susan January 28, 2016 at 3:20 am

An when did you get appointed the spokesman for “the people of Oregon”. There are a lot of people in Oregon who supported them. When the Feds closed the school down, (claiming it was for the safety of the students, but then immediately took over the school as their command post, until the district called BS and took their school back) anyway when the school was closed a group of parents took their kids out to the refuge for the day and let them see for themselves what was going on and talk with the people there. Many local people took food and supplies to them as a show of support. The group they were on their way to meet with when they were arrested were supporters too. As people listened and understood what the actual history and facts of the protesters concerns were many people got the courage to voice their support. So you don’t represent all of the “people of Oregon” just as my personal opinions and beliefs don’t represent the People of Utah.

      • .... January 28, 2016 at 3:26 pm

Don’t mind Suzie she’s just a typical isis supporter having a bad hair day

  • Lastdays January 27, 2016 at 8:05 am

It will take some time before the real story comes out of how this all went down. But in the end, the truth will come out that this was an ambush by the Feds to take out some or as many of this group as they could. Lavoy was taken out execution style by government hitmen to let the public know who is boss.
I’m not 100% for the standoff in Oregon but I believe in 100% of their grievances regarding how the Feds have been systematically taking property and running ranchers off land for the last 50-100 years. Those concerns and protests of the ranchers are factual and indisputable. However, the government has brainwashed the public into believing that the Bundy’s and others are kooks and need to be dealt with swiftly and harshly. It’s sad that people can be so easily coerced to ignore the the obvious.
This was another sad and embarrassing event by our Federal Police to completely fail at resolving a peaceful protest by american citizens.

    • Chris January 27, 2016 at 11:03 am

You clearly are not following this very closely. Already, two Bundy associates who were eye witnesses to the events have contradicted the “execution” claims with Youtube videos and indicate that Finicum “charged” the agents. Having already paraded around the media for weeks with firearms, Finicum could reasonably be perceived as a deadly threat to agents. If you are armed and come at LEO’s in an aggressive manner, you deserve to be shot. Finicum was either suicidal or stupid, possibly both.

    • IDIOT COMMENTERS January 27, 2016 at 12:31 pm

Turn on your television set to see what’s happening. They’ll all run, of course, but they’re making a lot of noise.

As an Oregonian, I have no further patience with your sappy comments.

    • Susan January 28, 2016 at 3:55 am

I agree with you. I support their grievances 100% too, but am saddened that they felt the only way to get their cause out to Americans was to take over the refuge so that it would get national attention. And then the govt controlled MSM put such a false spin on everything that it is just unbelievable how many people/sheeple are blinded by it and unable to think for themselves. I think that the majority of the people posting here have absolutely no idea what the BLM has done to hundreds if not thousands of ranchers with their land grabs. The Harney county/ Bird Refuge crap started back way before the Hammonds. Who wouldn’t set a backfire to save their home? And the hammonds are in prison for it a Second time? Maybe if Judge Gatsby’s brother wasn’t a big shot @ the BLM their trial would have been fair. And to those of you who think this is mostly about the Bundy’s and grazing fees, it goes far far deeper than that.

  • observer January 27, 2016 at 8:47 am

I’m going to bet it was some shaky handed LEO that pulled the first trigger. Therefore, a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the deceased family will be the next order for the taxpayers in Oregon. Saying he was reaching for his gun, won’t work in this situation, which is the un-excusable con that’s mostly played out in cop vs. civilian situations. It wasn’t a shoot-out at the place where the “trespass” was taking place, but rather on a public highway where the FBI decided to set up their roadblock, knowing that these parties were heading to a open public meeting.

Since there was no “shoot out” as you all would have liked, what violent charge are you all expecting the Fed prosecutor to come up with? Guaranteed at the end of the day, the charge that will hold doesn’t constitute “prison” time. I suggest you all read up on Plata vs Gov Brown, et al and learn that all people have rights, including the incarcerated and this case has set a huge precedence in how states are realigning their criminal laws. The Feds have already been realigning laws according to what was learned in California’s landmark Supreme Court case. Not one inmate lifted a gun, but rather knocked the entire state on it’s butt with their lawsuit; all at the taxpayers expense. That’s all it takes and then case law prevails. (Ironically it didn’t for the Hammonds’ constitutional rights and that’s what all this initially was about)

But the scary part in all this, is watching, listening, and trying to absorb the mentality of those who post. Makes one wonder how safe the younger generation really is with all the chaos and segregation of America. An ole timer DOD doesn’t even think the new generation DOD aka FBI are well suited for the job. Like the seals, one needs to be elite and sadly “elite” wouldn’t have had a shaky hand in any circumstance.

Clearly Bundy’s upbringing that some Bishop would save him, didn’t apply in Oregon. Clearly these cowboys were in the wrong neck of the woods.

    • tcrider January 27, 2016 at 10:27 am

These white scum terrorist were endangering the safety of everyone within a fifty mile area of where they were finally taken down, they will not see any kind of a sympathy from any judge, they took a federal facility with assault rifles and these boys are gona be camping out with BaBa for a long time.

      • Susan January 28, 2016 at 5:54 am

Well Judge Gatsby’s brother is a big cheese at the BLM up there so just like the Hamond’ s they won’t get any sympathy (or a fair trial) from him. Lucky for the Bundy’s that their attorney’s are already up there and on top of that one. And I’m sure they aren’t looking for “sympathy”. Those Bundy’s know the Constitution and the law better than 99.99999% of Americans. They just expect a judge that does the same and upholds the oath he took.
And just curious who this BaBa is you keep referring to? Is he the “BaBa Black Sheep have you any wool”? Cause that might be nice with , yes sir yes sir, three bags full. They could make a nice blanket or some gloves or something. Ohhhhh…..or are you hoping they encounter your old lover, BUBBA?

Never gonna happen. There’s clear evidence that Finicum charged the law with a loaded firearm. He didn’t want to go to prison and said so himself. Suicide by cop.

      • Susan January 28, 2016 at 4:15 am

Would you document your clear evidence? If you’re talking about the video the guy driving the jeep posted , he then retracts his eyewitness report in his second video. Lots of well “they” said and “he” said, which is only heresay in a court of law and not admissible evidence. Goes from saying LaVoy charged to saying well I was 200 yds away and so the other guys told me…Many think he is a Fed infiltrator planted at the reserve. Why was he not arrested? His comment that he is too smart to get arrested makes e wonder who he is. And the fact that he volunteered to drive Aamon that particular time? Threw the others under the proverbial bus and is reciting whatever he’s told to say now. Interesting fellow.

        • tcrider January 28, 2016 at 9:04 am

don’t worry susie, the feds have their version of the video, and it will be shown when the judge asks for it.
there is nothing heroic or patriotic about the cowards that take federal facilities with assault rifles. The cowards and their families will be visited by the feds in the near future and I bet many of them will also lose their welfare bennies.

One world government coming you ask…..I’ve got the answer, absolutely! The answer is right there in the Bible

  • Accountable January 27, 2016 at 10:01 am

Let’s not forget the real reasons for the government’s criminal land grab of the Hammond’s property (as well as many other private properties and their refusal to return the land to the states).

The Bundy’s involvement and the subsequent murder of Finicum provides a distraction from Clintons’ heavy involvement in a scheme that’s transferred 20 percent of U.S. uranium production to Putin and Russia. The key company in that deal is Uranium One (Canadian company). Remember the name. The Russian atomic energy agency, Rosatom, had taken over Uranium One with uranium-mining stakes stretching from Central Asia to the American West. The deal made Rosatom one of the world’s largest uranium producers.

Since uranium is considered a strategic asset, with implications for national security, the deal [to sell Uranium One to Putin] had to be approved by a committee composed of representatives from a number of United States government agencies. Among the agencies that eventually signed off was the State Department, then headed by Mr. Clinton’s wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

As the Russians gradually assumed control of Uranium One in three separate transactions from 2009 to 2013, Canadian records show, a flow of cash made its way to the Clinton Foundation. Uranium One’s chairman used his family foundation to make four donations totaling $2.35 million. Those contributions were not publicly disclosed by the Clintons, despite an agreement Mrs. Clinton had struck with the Obama White House to publicly identify all donors. Other people with ties to the company made donations as well. Shortly after the Russians announced their intention to acquire a majority stake in Uranium One, Mr. Clinton received $500,000 for a Moscow speech from a Russian investment bank with links to the Kremlin that was promoting Uranium One stock.

Whether the donations to the Clinton Foundation played any role in the approval of the uranium deal is unknown. But the episode underscores the special ethical challenges presented by the Clinton Foundation, headed by a former president who relied heavily on foreign cash to accumulate $250 million in assets even as his wife helped steer American foreign policy as secretary of state, presiding over decisions with the potential to benefit the foundation’s donors.

FINALLY….Someone who gets it!!! And actually has done some research to contribute to the conversation. (Not like the majority of those on here who constantly flood this site with their childish name calling, insulting each other, and useless and always negative comments and jibberish.)
I’ve never trusted either of the Clinton’s and they constantly give me proof not to. So then add in that “Dirty Harry” Reid has acquired the majority of the land around the Bundy Ranch and is trying for all of the Bundys land. The majority of the BLM Land Grabs are for the benefit of some politician or CEO to make personal gain from. And these people are terrorists for trying to wake the rest of us up to what the hell is happening to America? HELLO…..anybody out there????? Time to wake up!!!

Prove to us that Harry Reid owns any land in the vicinity of the Bundy ranch. The Clark County Recorder has no record of any such ownership. Land ownership is public record, but yet you do not appear to have checked it.

          • Susan January 29, 2016 at 10:51 pm

Well he obviously doesn’t have the land titles under “Harry Reid”. But I saw copies of the documents/titles for it about 2 years ago. It is hidden by using Trusts, LLC’s and Corporation’s. But when the investigators searched through the records of the ^^^ they found that they are owned by Harry Reid and also his son Ryan Reid. I will find the link to the copies and post it for you.

And did you see the terrorists cleaning up the mouse turds those terrified mice left all over those Indian Artifacts the feds had chucked into the basement? Must have scared the s*** right out of them. And those terrorists filling up all the bird feeders with bird seed? I’m sure most of those posting here would have called in the drones for that.

Yeah these clowns got exactly what they deserve..nice shooting by the law enforcement agencies. I’m glad no law enforcement personnel were hurt.

I would like to take a moment to thank the law enforcement officers from varying agencies who stood up for Americans last night and every night.

Ammon Bundy claimed that God told him to carry out this farce. Sounds like God doesn’t really like you, Ammon. Apparently, God was just messin’ with your mind. Do you know what a messianic complex is? Might want to read up on it.

The people who’ve been terrorized in Oregon are glad to see this come to an end. Too bad that Finicum got shot – would rather have seen him in prison, but he made his own choice. Please keep the yahoos in Utah and Nevada and Arizona where they belong. If they want to make trouble and “take a stand” they should have done it at home. Oregon doesn’t put up with this kind of Shinola. And the law doesn’t care who’s kids they are. Do the crime, do the time.
