Prep wrestling: Hundreds participate in PV Casperson Invitational

ST. GEORGE — Dixie’s Hobbs Nyberg and Brady Jones of Desert Hills were the highest local placewinners in the Pine View Casperson Invitational 2016 on Saturday. Both men finished third in their respective weight classes.

Nyberg downed Ben Worlton of Pine View in the third place match at 138 pounds, pinning his Panther opponent at the 3:30 mark. Jones pinned Jose Yanez of Canyon Springs at the 4:05 mark of their 152-pound match.

Brenr Nelson of Pine View and Garrick Hall of Desert Hills each placed fifth in their weight classes. Nelson pinned Caijun Jackson of Cheyenne at the 3:20 mark of their 182-pound match. Hall pinned Mycal Orme of Canyon Springs at the 34-second mark of their 285-pound battle.

The tournament field had a strong southern Nevada flavor with several teams out of Las Vegas and nearby Mesquite and Panaca in the 30-team field. There were also a couple of teams from northern Utah.

Green Valley won the tournament championship with 285 points. Pine View finished 10th in the field while Desert Hills was 16th, Hurricane 20th and Dixie 22nd.

Next for Region 9 teams are the final duals of the season. Snow Canyon will be at Desert Hills on Wednesday while Thursday’s matches include Cedar at Hurricane and Dixie at Pine View. Cedar leads the chase for the league championship with a 4-0 record. Snow Canyon and Desert Hills are both 3-1. Pine View and Hurricane are 1-3 and Dixie is 0-4.
