St. George Half Marathon winners announced, records crushed

ST. GEORGE — The 34th annual St. George Half Marathon and 5K delivered some surprises Saturday, including 14-year-old Trinity Schimbeck winning the women’s 5K race. Although Schimbeck did not break the record for the course, coming in at 20:20.5 (20 minutes, 20.5 seconds), she is the youngest person to have won this race.

There were, however, several records broken:

  • Amber Green of St. George finished the half-marathon course in 1:19:11 (one hour, 19 minutes, 11 seconds), breaking the women’s 35-39 age group record of 1:22:12.4
  • Emily Barrett of Provo finished the half-marathon in 1:20:20.7, breaking the women’s 20-24 age group record of 1:27:47.4
  • Carrie Jube of Provo finished the half-marathon in 1:22:24.2, also breaking the women’s 20-24 age group record of 1:27:47.4
  • Dave Holt of Washington finished the 5K in 16:36.1 and broke the men’s 35-39 age group record of 19:13.3
  • Kaden McDonald of St. George, 24, finished the 5K in 17:32.2, breaking the men’s 20-24 age group record of 19:15.4

“Races, especially long distance races, always have the possibility of surprise no matter how hard you have trained,” said Aaron Metler, race and special events coordinator for the City of St. George Recreation Department. You can never rest on your laurels, because someone is always nipping at your heels, unless, it seems, you are Amber Green. That woman is a machine.”

The top three of the winners in each age category, starting at 10 and under and one assisted runner, took home the newly designed race trophy to remind them of the beautiful topography of Southern Utah a 3D art piece of the famous Dixie Red Rock, also known as the Sugarloaf, that looms high above the city.
