SOUTHERN UTAH — An interstate police convoy traveling north through Utah Wednesday played escort to the parents of 18-year law enforcement veteran Douglas Barney who was shot and killed Sunday in Holladay while responding to a traffic accident. Barney’s parents were away on vacation when the shooting incident happened.
“They’ve been leap frogged from agency to agency (along Interstate 15),” Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Bambi Baie said. “They were on vacation and they’re trying to head home so we’re going to just shuttle them.”
Law enforcement officers of various agencies from Las Vegas, Nevada, Mohave County, Arizona, and Utah will lead the family home to northern Utah, she said, adding that Utah Highway Patrol troopers in Washington and Iron counties, along with members of the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, will take over and lead them as far as Beaver.
The chain will continue from there until Barney’s parents arrive home.
“I’m just thinking that they should get recognized for what their sacrifice was,” Baie said. “You know — their son.”
