WASHINGTON COUNTY — A pregnant female was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George Saturday night after an unknown driver cut off the vehicle she was riding in, causing them to crash into the guardrail on Interstate 15.
A 2000 Chevrolet Suburban carrying a 39-year old pregnant female and several family members was traveling southbound on Interstate 15 near mile marker 36 near the Ranch exit for Black Ridge and Ash Creek Reservoir.
The woman was in a Suburban with a smaller vehicle directly in front of them when a dark SUV moved into the left hand lane abruptly, cutting the lead vehicle off and causing the driver to hit their brakes, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Joe Pastor said. The driver of the Suburban swerved to the right to avoid an accident but lost control and hit the guardrail before coming to rest near the emergency lane of the Interstate.
The dark SUV that cut the first vehicle off continued traveling down I-15 without slowing or stopping to make sure everyone in the Suburban was OK.
“We’re not sure if that driver wasn’t aware of the accident, or if they knew what happened but just kept going,” Pastor said.
Family members in the smaller vehicle the Suburban was following did stop and render assistance while police and emergency personnel responded to the scene.
No injuries were reported, Pastor said, but the pregnant passenger was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center mainly as a precaution to make sure she and the baby were unharmed.
Minimal damage was sustained by the Suburban, and it was driven from the accident.
Washington County Sheriff’s deputies, Utah Highway Patrol and Iron County Ambulance responded to the scene.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
