ST. GEORGE — Southern Utahns rang in the new year in style Friday at the New Year’s Day Masquerade at George Streetfest on Main, in spite of chilly temperatures.
DJ Lex and his Amazing Steam Powered Music Machine started out the evening on the Main Stage, and was followed by Dixie Funk Band of St. George, RKDN of Provo and headliner GoldBoot of Las Vegas.
The 1862 incorporation of the City of St. George was celebrated with a live performance, “Town Birthday at the Tabernacle,” a live performance featuring characters from history with biographical skits and musical numbers.
The performance was a collaboration between St. George Tabernacle, St. George Live and Historic Downtown, and was held inside the Tabernacle for warmth.
The Zion Brewing Company Jazz Garden moved indoors for the first time, and will stay indoors for the duration of the cold weather — expected to be January and possibly February.
“Moving forward, anytime the weather is uncomfortably cold or we have rain, we’ll be indoors here at the Ancestor Square Tower,” Melynda Thorpe, executive producer of George Streetfest, said. “We’re really excited to have this indoor location as an option.”
Outdoors on Main Street, fire barrels placed by the St. George City Fire Department and an enclosed, heated photo booth kept attendees warm.
