U-turn results in woman extricated from car, transported to hospital

ST. GEORGE — A woman was extricated from her car and transported to the hospital Wednesday morning following a two-vehicle collision in a St. George neighborhood.

Just after 7:30 a.m., a small red car and a large red van were traveling east on 100 South, approaching the 100 West intersection. A witness told police that the red car pulled to the right and immediately pulled out left to make a U-turn in front of the red van, St. George Police Officer Tyrell Bangerter said.

The resulting collision smashed the driver’s door of the red car, trapping the female driver inside the car and prompting a response by the St. George Fire Department to the scene to extricate her.

The extrication took several minutes, as the door of the car was so badly damaged it had to be removed with power tools.

The woman driving the red car was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, Bangerter said.

The driver of the red van complained of lower back pain, Bangerter said, and the passengers in the van suffered minor injuries, but no one in the van was transported to the hospital.

All occupants were wearing their seat belts and airbags did deploy.

Bangerter said the driver of the red car will be issued a citation for an improper U-turn.
