LOGAN — Cedar High School football finished its first season under new head coach Josh Bennett with a disappointing 45-0 loss to Logan Friday, one week after winning its first playoff game since 2011.
Logan ended Cedar’s season short of the semifinals in a 45-0 game. Cedar will look forward to next year, while Logan will move on to the semifinals at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Cedar’s offense didn’t move well in the first half and the Redmen defense also couldn’t keep the Grizzlies out of the end zone. Logan quarterback Hunter Horsley was red hot to start the game. He fired three first-quarter touchdown passes to stake the Grizzlies to a 21-0 lead. Horsley hit Hartman Rector with a 1-yarder on the opening drive, followed with a 22-yarder to Spencer Corbett and then capped the first quarter with a 12-yarder to Rector.
Logan added a 31-yard field goal from Joshua Young and a Horsley 2-yard TD run before halftime and it was 31-0 at intermission.
Things didn’t get better as play resumed after the half and Cedar lost a fumble, which led to a short field and an easy Logan touchdown by Colton Hatch from a yard out. Hatch added a 22-yard run for six later in the third and the mercy rule was invoked, leading to a quick conclusion to the game.
Bennett implemented a new spread offense in his first season as the head coach. It appeared more dynamic and flashy and helped the team get to a 5-6 record overall and 2-3 in region play as well as last week’s playoff win over Judge Memorial.
The Redmen will now have to look forward to what lies ahead next year as they lose some key players, but also return integral players to their team.
On offense, the Redmen return starting quarterback Mason Fakahua next year for his senior season and with him will be key players such as Derek Ball, Travis Tait, Drake Lewis and Jade Bulloch.
Defensively, Cedar is losing both McCrae Murray and Koalman Kimber, but will return Dillon Pugh and Braden Phillips for their senior seasons.
