News short: Vehicle catches fire near gas pumps

ST. GEORGE — A vehicle fire that started next to gas pumps at the Bloomington Wal-Mart was extinguished without incident Saturday morning thanks to the calm response of the driver.

After fueling his minivan, the driver noticed his vehicle was on fire and drove to an open area in the parking lot before calling the St. George Fire Department for help.

Fire Captain Scott Peacock said Engine 28 responded to the call and extinguished the fire within minutes. The fire was contained to the engine compartment.

Peacock said St. George Fire responds to about one vehicle fire a week, adding that all gas pumps are equipped with an emergency shut-off switch to prevent a serious fire.

St. George resident Kristopher Larson was on the scene and provided the attached video to St. George News.
