3A State tennis: Big second day carries Park City to state title in SLC

SALT LAKE CITY — It was a disappointing day for southern Utah netters Saturday at the 3A State Tournament at Liberty Park, but not so for the Park City Miners, who took home two individual titles and the team trophy.

tennisFreshman Livi Rockwood defeated Pine View’s Hattie Erekson in the first singles semifinals 6-1, 6-1, then rallied to stop Dessert Hills’ Madz Eames in the championship match 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 to win state in her first try.

First singles at state has been owned the last four years by Pine View star Lacey Hancock, who was only the second player in state history to win first singles four times. Rockwood will try and match that feat after capturing the title as a young frosh this season.

As for Eames, a senior, she will have to settle for second place for the second straight season. She defeated Sydney Nichols of Bear River 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals Saturday.

Erekson, a junior, will try and unseat Rockwood one more time in 2016.

The Miners also won at third singles and had team members in the finals of every slot at state.

Grantsville junior Baillie Sandberg won second singles, while sophomore Taylor Matz was the Park City state champ at third singles. Sandberg defeated Miner Gabby Rockwood in the second singles final 7-5, 7-6, while Matz dominated in the third singles final with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Grantsville’s Morgan Matthews.

At first doubles, Grantsville’s Whitney Castagno and Lexi Jackson beat Park City’s Marina Mayo and Julianna Signor, 6-2, 7-6.

At second doubles, Grantsville’s Becca Toone and Marissa Linares beat Caileigh Lydon and Marisa Zanetti of Park City.

Park City compiled 24 team points, edging the Cowboys by three. Desert Hills was a distant third with nine points and neither Logan, nor Pine View scored on Saturday and finished tied for fourth with six team points.
