ST. GEORGE – The Bureau of Land Management-Utah is seeking public nominations for one position on its Resource Advisory Council in Category 2, which includes representatives of nationally or regionally recognized environmental organizations, archaeological and historic organizations, dispersed recreation activities and wild horse and burro organizations.
The nominee will fill a position being vacated Jan. 7, 2016, and will serve for three years. The BLM will consider nominations submitted by Nov. 2.
The BLM’s Resource Advisory Councils help the bureau carry out its stewardship of 245 million acres of public lands. The RACs are composed of citizens chosen for their expertise in natural resource issues. The Bureau, which manages more land than any other federal agency, has 24 RACs across the West, where most BLM-managed land is located.
Each RAC consists of 12 to 15 members with an interest in public land management, including such individuals as conservationists, ranchers, outdoor recreationists, state and local government officials, tribal officials and academics.
The diverse membership of each RAC is aimed at achieving a balanced outlook that the BLM needs for its mission, which is to manage the public lands for multiple uses.
The RAC generally has three or four meetings a year, each of which may last one-two days, Special Programs Coordinator Sherry Foot said. Meetings are not necessarily held in Salt Lake City, often they will be held at a specific location within Utah depending upon the subject matter.
Members are appointed to three-year terms and may be reappointed for one additional term. Members serve without salary, Foot said, but are reimbursed travel and per diem expenses.

- Letters of reference from represented interests or organizations
- A completed RAC application
- Any other information that addresses the nominee’s qualifications
Individuals may nominate themselves or others. Council members for the position currently open must be Utah residents.
The BLM will evaluate nominees based on their education, training, experience and knowledge of the geographical area. Nominees should demonstrate a commitment to collaborative resource decision-making, the BLM’s notice said.
The Obama Administration prohibits individuals who are currently federally registered lobbyists to serve on all Federal Advisory Committee Act and non-FACA boards, committees or councils.
