MOHAVE COUNTY, Ariz. – Falling asleep at the wheel resulted in a driver rolling his vehicle and crashing into an embankment on Interstate 15, near mile marker 26, in Mohave County, Arizona, Tuesday.

A man fell asleep while driving southbound on I-15, Arizona Department of Public Safety Sgt. John Bottoms said, causing his vehicle to roll over into the embankment near mile marker 26.

Once jolted awake, the driver overcorrected as he attempted to avoid going off the road, Bottoms said. The car began to skid as he lost control of the vehicle, and the car rolled at least once before crashing into the embankment and landing upside down.

The driver, a resident of Mesquite, Nevada, was outside of the vehicle when emergency units arrived, Bottoms said, and he told the officer he was uninjured. The driver was examined by emergency personnel but refused ambulance transport to the hospital.

The driver’s vehicle, a 2007 Kia Spectra, was towed from the scene.

Emergency personnel from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Littlefield Fire Department, Beaver Dam Fire Department and St. George Fire Department responded to the scene.

One southbound lane of I-15 was completely closed near mile marker 26 for approximately 45 minutes as the accident scene was cleared, causing traffic delays.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of the findings.
