CEDAR CITY — The Cedar Redmen forced five turnovers in a 41-13 Homecoming win over Snow Canyon Friday night.
Cedar started fast, jumping out to a 27 point lead before the Warriors found the end zone with just under three minutes left in the first half. Cedar’s defense was the star of the game in the beginning as it held the Warriors to 11 yards and no first downs in the first quarter.
Snow Canyon then looked like it might start a comeback early in the second quarter when a trick play for Cedar resulted in an interception. But two plays later, Drake Lewis, who threw the interception on the trick play, grabbed an interception of his own and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown.
After Snow Canyon’s Jackson Nowatzke scored the Warriors first touchdown, Cedar’s punter tried to help Snow Canyon by kicking it off the side of his foot. This gave Snow Canyon the ball on Cedar’s 30-yard line, but Cedar’s defense was too stout. The Warriors would turn the ball over on downs to end the half with CHS ahead 27-6.
Even though the defense stole the show, Cedar’s offense was flowing well also. Cedar scored on its first two drives, going 123 yards in just the two drives alone. Two touchdowns were on big plays as Cedar’s Mason Fakahua hit Bracken Yardley for a 23-yard touchdown, then later, Fakahua found an opening and ran for 62 yards and a touchdown. Lewis also got in on the offensive action and got Cedar to the 1-yard line after a 65-yard run.
To start the second half, Snow Canyon looked strong as Josh Barnes rattled off a 52-yard rush to set the Warriors up at the Cedar 22. But another interception stopped the drive in the end zone. This time, Cedar’s Jaden Tullis was the defender on the play. Tullis has intercepted a pass in every game this season for the Redmen.
Snow Canyon would score again, but then its next three drives would end in turnovers, and the fourth would end the game. The first was a fumble forced and recovered by Berick Englestead for a 33-yard fumble recovery touchdown. Then SC had an interception and another fumble.
Cedar, 3-3 overall and 1-1 in region, plays at Hurricane next Friday. Snow Canyon, 3-3 and 0-2, next plays at Dixie Thursday.
