Summer’s ‘Final Friday Gallery Stroll’ concludes with full palette, prizes

CEDAR CITY — Summer’s end is drawing near and with it the last opportunity to visit exhibits downtown Cedar City in the season’s Cedar City Art Walk “Final Friday Gallery Stroll,” Friday from 5-8 p.m.

The Cedar City Art Walk features collaborations between artists and local businesses and galleries with 16 stops along the walk in or near downtown Cedar City. Art Walk brochures are available at Artisans Art Gallery, The Grind Coffeehouse, and by downloading a map here: Cedar City Art Walk Map.

The council suggests you begin on the east side of town at the Heritage Center, 105 N. 100 East, then walk west on Center Street/University Boulevard visiting venues marked by posters in windows or outside the shops. End with the exhibits on campus at Southern Utah University. The event is timed to conclude before the Utah Shakespeare Festival performances – a fitting and cultural capstone to your Final Friday stroll.

Artisans Art Gallery

Artisans Art Gallery is going all out Friday with live music, refreshments, artists and representatives from the Orchestra of Southern Utah, the Cedar City Arts Council and the Utah Shakespeare Festival.

Take a look through a large format field camera at Artisans, shared by award-winning photographer Robert Hall.  Consider the photographs by Cody Smith on display and for sale with 50 percent his sales going to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab.

Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery

The Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery at SUU will be also have live music, artist demonstrations and the Southern Utah Art Invitational and Sale.

The Southern Utah String Quartet will playing both popular and classical selections from 5-7 p.m., including music by romantic era composer Alexander Borodin.

Artists Larry Laskowski and Joey Favino will be at Braithwaite demonstrating their own painting techniques and chatting with guests.

Other venue offerings

Make your own letterpress print at Poser’s Place where designer and SUU professor Jessica Gerlach will demonstrate letterpress printmaking.

Enjoy a chair massage and 30-minute ionic foot bath at Stone Path Massage and Energy Center, at a discounted rate of $10, while Layton artist Sierra Dickey presents her art and visits with guests.

GalleryGALA, across the street, will offer light refreshments; while those strolling the south side of Center Street might visit the Shukos food truck.

El Rey Inn and Suites will have Chip Wiggin demonstrating the inking and printing process of traditional relief printmaking; while the Brick House Café next door will host photographer Ryan Larson showing how to create cyanotype photography prints at the Brick House Café.

As you near the university campus, you’ll visit the Beverley Taylor Sorensen Center for the Arts Information Station in front of the SUU Alumni House across from the construction site. The booth will offer giveaways and information about the Southern Utah Museum of Art and the new Utah Shakespeare Festival theatre.

Then, fittingly, you’ll want to visit the Adams Theatre 2015 Farewell Exhibit next to the construction site for the new theater, where the Randall L. Jones Theatre has a running display in the old theater’s honor through Oct. 31.

Enter the drawing to win

The Arts Council has started a new stamp card program for the Art Walk awarding the drawing winner a pair of Orchestra of Southern Utah season tickets and a DVD, Holst: The Planets, an HD Odyssey. There will also be a drawing awarding tickets to a fall season play at the Utah Shakespeare Festival.

Pick up a stamp card from any of the locations along the stroll and collect stamps from the participating venues. Cards filled with 8 stamps may be entered in the drawing at the Artisans Art Gallery. The drawing will be made at the conclusion of the Final Friday stroll. Multiple entries are allowed and the stamp cards may be turned in anytime before the end of the Art Walk.
