HURRICANE – Cars crunched metal, incited cheers and sent dirt flying in great red sprays Saturday night at the Washington County Fair’s grand finale event, the annual Demolition Derby.
The derby began at 7 p.m. and, true to form, brought a climax to the Washington County Fair with packed grandstands and specially modified cars racing around the arena with one goal in mind: Be the last man standing – in this case, the last car running.
Each vehicle has its glass removed to meet safety regulations and drivers are prohibited from ramming the driver’s side door of the vehicle.
Crowds hoot and hollered with each bang of metal as red dust was kicked up into the air.
Competing categories included figure 8s, demo derbies, trucks, and limited weld cars. Competitors ranged in class from child to adult.
“I come here every year as an audience member but this year I’m a pit crew guy,” Dylan Stratton of Hurricane said, “I love the derby.”

Always a good time!
The county fair is great, but why can’t it be held in September, or October when it’s not 108 outside?
