At about 10:30 a.m., a Mustang was heading south at high speed on I-15 at mile marker 12, driving recklessly with another vehicle, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Grant Hintze said. The Mustang was cut off by the other vehicle, at which point the Mustang went into the median, hit the guardrail, bounced over to the right shoulder and crashed.

At that point, a red Nissan Versa slowed down.

“That vehicle was rear-ended by a semitruck that was behind it,” Hintze said, adding the semitruck  wasn’t traveling too fast, but the impact was enough to give the driver of the Nissan whiplash.

The woman driving the Mustang was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center by ambulance.

“(The Mustang driver) has a broken leg and broken bones,” Hintze said.

The vehicle that was driving recklessly with the Mustang left the scene, but Hintze said they have a good idea of where it is.

“We think we have identified it, thanks to witnesses,” Hintze said.

One lane of southbound I-15 was closed for over an hour while the accidents were investigated and cleaned up. The traffic backup stretched past the Hurricane exit, Exit 16.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
