CEDAR CITY – Authorities are investigating what is believed to have been an armed robbery attempt in the parking lot of Wal-Mart in Cedar City Thursday evening.

“It just happened up here in the parking lot between two people who don’t know each other,” Cedar City Police Sgt. Jimmy Roden said.

At approximately 6:20 p.m., responders received reports that shots had been fired and an attempted robbery had taken place at Wal-Mart. Units from the Cedar City Police Department and Utah Highway Patrol responded to the scene.

A man and woman told police they were parked in their vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot when a black man entered entered the back seat of their vehicle, displayed a gun and demanded money, a press release from the Cedar City Police Department said.

“The victim quickly exited the vehicle and began calling for help,” the press release said. “The suspect exited the (alleged) victim’s vehicle and joined at least one other black male in fleeing. The two suspects fled the area in a silver or gray, smaller passenger car.”

The alleged victims got back into their vehicle, according to the press release, and, moments later, the suspects returned.

“As the vehicles passed one another in the parking lot, at least one shot was fired from the suspect vehicle,” the press release said.

A bullet struck the man and woman’s vehicle, but they were not injured.

The suspects fled the scene.

The northeast corner of the Wal-Mart parking lot was blocked off for about an hour as responders investigated the incident. That portion of the parking lot was reopened at about 7:40 p.m.

As this report is published, the incident is still under investigation as officers interview witnesses and collect evidence.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call the Cedar City Police Department at 435-586-2956.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

This is a developing story. Refresh for updates as they are received.

I don’t believe the race of the assailants is relevant to this story and only tends to feed stereotypes. I recommend that St. George News edit its stories more carefully. If police release a description to solicit public help in identifying or locating a suspect, then race or ethnicity is relevant, but no such request was evident here.
    .
Similarly, the gender of drivers in traffic accidents is usually irrelevant and tends to feed stereotypes. Should we expect to have the color of a woman’s hair described, Joyce? After all, we all know about blondes.

Ha ha ha, Big G. As I am blonde, my response may be questionable so I won’t bother. 😀

Yes, Joyce, I had noticed your hair color and hoped to get your attention. But my comment that race, ethnicity and gender are often not relevant to a story was made in all seriousness. We have too much division in this country, often fostered by those with political agendas, and not enough “e pluribus Unum.” Thanks.

Facts is facts. Report the facts, if one stereotypes that is their problem. Political correctness runs amok. Also, political correctness is a political agenda in itself.

So, 42214, news reports should include a person’s age, place of employment, political party, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, place of birth, education level, schools attended, etc. and you’d feel that kind of information adds to the story? “Facts is facts,” and we’d all be in a better position to form judgments about folks who appear in news stories, but for what purpose?
          .
I have little sympathy for political correctness as practiced by the left in this country. But gratuitously including personal information irrelevant to a story, especially in this story, tends to divide, not unite.

Also moles, tattoos, teeth fillings etc. I said stereotyping is in the eyes of the beholder. You want to stereotype fine. You sound like you don’t want to know anything to protect yourself from stereotyping. I don’t think it is gratuitous to mention sex or race describing a suspected felon, it’s just a fact.

          • fun bag August 14, 2015 at 3:02 pm

uh oh BG, hypocrite much? You sound just like the “liberals” you hate so much. Maybe in the mugshot photos they can put some paper bags over their heads so we can’t tell that they’re black males? Would that work for you? And how did the republicans in the Bush II admin and republicans congress let the banks and economy collapse in 2008 since “there was absolutely no wrongdoing on their part” ???

          • 42214 August 14, 2015 at 3:42 pm

If the suspect’s name is Juan Jose Ortega or Shaniqua Leroy Washington or Bien Nyquen or Rashish Patel do we list it as John Doe so god forbid the reader doesn’t stereotype thus dividing and not uniting. I expect this in a sanctuary city of liberal progressives, not So Utah.

The more I think about it, Big Guy, the more you make sense on this issue.

    • Law24 August 14, 2015 at 4:18 pm

Big Guy, I feel it necessary to point out that the race information about the alleged suspects came directly from the Press Release Statement from the Police Department. Your assumption that STG News included the race of the assailants to “feed stereotypes” is beyond ridiculous. STG News is simply using information provided to them by police to alert the public as to what happened, and to hopefully encourage people to be on the look out for these criminals. Please re-read the article. Have a great day!

    • ladybugavenger August 14, 2015 at 9:31 pm

Here we go again Big Guy, race is relevant. We are not one race or one gender. Many want to believe there is no color or gender, I guess that would be you. But its a lie, we are a nation of many races and people are born male and female! Some may hate the way they were born and change it but that’s cuz they hate how they were born. God don’t make mistakes but people play God. Now back to race. We are not the same race!

  • fun bag August 14, 2015 at 10:25 am

Hey Big Guy, will you be replacing mesaman as our new village idiot since he got revealed? Why don’t you give me a coherent reason as to why the republicans under Bush II completely collapsed the banking system and economy (without some completely kooky and idiotic answer of blaming the “liberals” from 1992.)??? I want to hear you desperately defend your beloved Bush II and blame “them mean ol’ liberals”.

And if they’re trying to find 2 black men then they need to list them as being black so get over yourself.

  • Dexter August 14, 2015 at 2:11 pm

You don’t like the way the stories are written then by all means stay off the website.. And as far as FUN Bag’s comment… You’re right on the money.!

    • fun bag August 14, 2015 at 3:05 pm

I wounder if BIG GUY is such a dumb windbag in real life…

  • Bubbasheepherder August 14, 2015 at 2:22 pm

I am surprised Fun Bag hasn’t tied Bush II to the Mormons yet. What a goofy thoughtless life that guy lives.

  • beentheredonethat August 14, 2015 at 3:24 pm
