ST. GEORGE — The Vietnam Veterans Monument Organization is hosting a fundraising barbecue Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Zion Harley Davidson, 2350 N. Coral Canyon Blvd. in Washington. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, sides and dessert, as well as entertainment and over 25 raffle drawings and prizes.
Entertainment includes a live band, including military members, with selections from the Vietnam era.
“It should be fun, and it’s something that should be fun for this great cause,” Judy Cooley, event organizer, said. “Come show your support, it’s a worthy cause. These guys really need the ‘thank you’ and the welcome home.”
Cooley’s husband served three tours in Vietnam and later died because of complications related to exposure to Agent Orange — an herbicide used by the United States Military as part of an herbicidal warfare program during the Vietnam War — or Agent Orange poisoning.
Funds raised will go towards a planned monument celebrating Vietnam veterans.
“This monument is for all the men and women who served in Vietnam and were never treated as they should have been; when they came home they were called horrible names and (had) all sorts of things thrown at them some were even told to run to the restrooms and hurry and change out of their uniforms so that they would not get beaten,” Cooley said on her GoFundMe page. “They were never thanked for their service nor have they ever been given the respect that they deserve … please help me thank them.”
Lunch is $8 and includes sides and dessert.
Weather should be in the low 90s; please dress accordingly, and stay hydrated. The promoters are looking for help setting up, cooking or serving. Volunteers are welcome.
Donations are being accepted at Cache Valley Bank under “Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall” or online. Donations can also be dropped off to Cooley’s office at Canyon View Apartments, 1120 W. 360 North, unit 17, in St. George.
