CEDAR CITY — Snow Canyon’s Little Leaguers are returning to the Western Regionals after winning the Utah state title Saturday in Cedar City.
The Snow Canyon squad swept through the tourney, winning the championship against the Cedar national team 17-9. SC averaged about 12 runs a game in the state tournament and will head to San Bernardino, Calif., for the regional tourney in August.
The 17-9 final was actually a bit of a misleading score as Cedar National actually led 5-0 heading into the fourth inning. Snow Canyon rallied for eight runs in the fourth to take an 8-5 lead, but CN scored two in the bottom of the fourth to make it an 8-7 contest with two innings to play.
The Snow Canyon squad, coached by Gavin Frei, seized control of the game in the fifth, scoring seven more runs to make it 15-7. Braxton Hickman had four RBIs in the game for SC.
The Little League Majors (11-12-year olds) Western Regional is Aug. 9-15, with state winners from Utah, Hawaii, Nevada, Arizona and Northern and Southern California contending for the regional crown. Utah and Nevada have drawn byes in the first round and will play their first games Aug. 10. Snow Canyon, Utah’s champion, will play at 11:30 a.m. (PST) Aug. 10 against the winner of Arizona and Northern California.
The double-elimination tourney culminates with the regional championship game Saturday (Aug. 15) at 6 p.m.
The regional champ then moves on to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. Aug. 20-30.
