American Legion: Sentinels take 2-0 lead in best-of-five against Price

ST. GEORGE – The St George Sentinels swept the first two games of their five-game series against the Price American Legion squad Friday.

Chris Petrosie got the win in the first contest as the Sentinels outgunned Price 12-9.

legionlogo“They jumped on us early,” said Sentinel manager Shane Johanson. “We were down 7-2 at one point. Then we put up 10 runs in the last two innings.”

Petrosie started the game and persevered to pick up the win in the final inning. He struck out six. Kash Walker went 3 for 4 and Josh Howard was 2-3, but the big hit came from Jaden Rawlings, who hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh.

“We had already tied the game earlier in the inning,” said Johanson. “But that gave us some breathing room and put us up 10-7.”

Carter Milne got the win in the later game with the Sentinels limiting the Price batters to come away with an 8-2 win.

“Carter pitched exceptionally,” said Johanson. “And the second game was a lot different from the first. The runs trickled in. Aside from a three-run second inning, we scored one run in the other innings.”

Milne pitched a full game and scattered six hits and two runs (one earned). Walker went 2-4 with two doubles and Chandler Allman was 3-4. The two wins move the Sentinels to 13-7 for the summer season.

The two teams will resume the series in two weeks to determine which team qualifies for the state playoffs. The series is a best-of-five format, so the Sentinels need just one win to clinch their state playoff berth.

Before that resumption, the squad will travel to Boulder, Colo., next week and play a guaranteed minimum of four games in the Boulder Invitational. The games for the invitational are scheduled from July 8-12 with 32 teams participating. To win the Invitational, the Sentinels would have to win seven straight games.
