American Legion baseball: Bats alive as Clark, Sentinels power past Cedar

CEDAR CITY — The past was good for Connor Clark and the future looks bright as well. Oh, and the present isn’t too bad either.

Clark, who was named Tuesday to the 3A All-State second team after an outstanding junior season, pitched and hit the St. George Sentinels to a 17-8 win over Cedar. The right-hander overcame a slow start on the mound and hit a two-run home run in the slugfest.

St. George pounded out 20 hits in the game, including four each by two other Pine View High players, Logan LaFemina and Jarod Stirling. LaFemina, who is a first-team All-Stater,  was 4 for 5 with four singles, a walk, four stolen bases and three runs scored. Stirling, who will be a junior next year, had three singles and a double and stole three bases.

Clark had three hits and slugged 1.400 with a homer, double and a single, while knocking in four in five at bats. Other hitting stars for the Sentinels were Austin Ruseler (3-3, two doubles, three RBIs), Josh Howard (2-4, RBI) and Jaden Rawlings (2-5, run scored).

The Sentinels are 3-2 on the young season after splitting four games last week in northern Utah and southern Idaho.

St. George hosts the Salt Lake Gulls American Legion team Friday in a doubleheader at Elks Field, beginning at 6 p.m.
