ATV crash near Sand Hollow sends 2 to hospital; woman listed in serious condition

HURRICANE – A man and woman were transported to the hospital, with the woman listed in serious condition, after their fun was cut short Thursday morning following an ATV crash on a stretch of Sand Hollow Road in Hurricane.

At 9:53 a.m., officers and medical personnel were dispatched to the area of 2700 S. 1100 West in Hurricane on a report of an ATV crash, Hurricane City Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said.

Officers responded to the scene and found a 27-year-old man, who had been operating the ATV, and his 23-year-old female passenger had crashed while riding a 2013 Polaris 550, Buell said.

The woman had a serious laceration to her arm as well as some scrapes and abrasions, he said. She was transported via ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George for her injuries and is listed in serious condition.

The man sustained minor injuries, including scratches and abrasions, Buell said, and was also transported by ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center to be treated for his injuries.

The man and woman were both wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

“Based on information gathered,” Buell said, “it (was) found that the driver was very inexperienced on an ATV, lost control of the ATV and went off the roadway and hit a fence and crashed.”

The two were traveling in a group at the time the collision occurred, Buell said. No other injuries were reported.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
