MONTICELLO — The Bureau of Land Management Utah Monticello Field Office is seeking public input on an environmental assessment that analyzes issuing a multi-year special recreation permit to the Hole in the Rock Foundation. The proposed permit would authorize guided group trekking and hiking in three areas associated with the Hole in the Rock Trail in San Juan County: Long Flat/Snow Flat, Comb Wash/San Juan Hill, and The Cedars/Salvation Knoll areas.
The proposed trekking activities are intended to provide experiential learning opportunities for up to 250 participants at a time and are focused on routes associated with the 1879-1880 Hole in the Rock expedition. The majority of the proposed annual use would occur June 1 through August 31.
The environmental assessment addresses five alternatives that vary in overall use, timing and types of use on the three routes in addition to a no-action alternative.
The EA is available for review and public comment on the BLM Utah Environmental Notification Bulletin Board online.
Written comments will be accepted by letter or email until May 29.
The BLM’s advisory notes that the most useful comments are those that contain new technical or scientific information relevant to the proposed action. Comments should be as specific as possible. Comments which contain only opinions or preferences will not receive a formal response but may be considered in the BLM decision-making process. Commenters are asked to reference “Hole in the Rock” with their submissions.
