(1917 – April 13, 2015)
Robert M. Winston passed away on April 13, 2015, of natural causes, influenced in part by 98 years of living, at his home in St. George, Utah, attended by his wife Susannah. Born in Sturgis, Kentucky, his father died when he was three, and his mother raised six children on a small town school teacher’s salary. Just before WWII he worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C., while attending law school at night.
During the war, he served in the U.S. Air Force Counter Intelligence, tracking down Japanese balloon-bombs in the U.S. While stationed at Hill Field in Ogden, Utah, he met Susannah Jean Brandley of Salt Lake City. They fell in love and married in Denver, Colorado, on October 12, 1944. After the war ended, they settled in Springville, Utah. Through the influence and example of dear friends there, Bob joined the LDS church.
In 1954, the family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Robert worked in Commercial Sales for Collins Radio. Subsequently, he joined Bendix Avionics and they moved to Towson, Maryland, and then Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. They have enjoyed their retirement in St. George and Pine Valley, Utah, for the past 28 years.
Robert was a devoted member of the LDS church and served as branch president, bishop, stake president, regional representative, the first president of the Atlanta temple, first counselor in the St. George temple, and as a faithful home teacher.
Susannah, his wife of 70 years, and their four children cherish his sweet memory. Jeffrey Winston (Gretchen) of Boulder, Colorado, H. Michael Winston (Joan) of Shelley, Idaho, David Winston (Maartje) of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Suzanne Harris (Kay) of Cedar City, Utah, as well as 21 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.
A humble person, “Papa” had a wry sense of humor, loved to play card games with family and friends, and treasured time spent with his extended family. He and “Nani” reached out to befriend everyone they met and their circle of dear friends extends literally around the world.
Funeral Services
- Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 25, at 12:30 pm at the Green Valley Stake Center, 511 South Valley View Drive, St. George.
- Visitation will be Saturday, from 10 a.m. – noon prior to services at the stake center.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund would be appreciated.
