‘Broadway in the Canyon’ actors arrive at Tuacahn

IVINS — After viewing over 1,500 live auditions between New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Provo, Salt Lake City and locally, Tuacahn Amphitheatre announced Friday it has selected a cast of 40 incredibly talented actors to star in this year’s “Broadway in the Canyon” summer shows.

“Ten years ago when I was first involved, we held auditions and only about 150 actors actually came,” Artistic Director Scott Anderson said. “In fact, in New York there weren’t very many that came at all.  In January and February we looked at more than 1,500 actors and that doesn’t count the total number of submissions. It’s becoming more difficult to make our final selections because instead of a handful of seasoned Broadway talent coming, we now have literally hundreds coming to audition wanting to perform here at Tuacahn.”

Of the 40 roles that were cast, 19 of them are members of the Actors’ Equity Association.  This means Tuacahn attracts the best of the best, which immensely enhances the production value of its shows.

“For example, every show produced on Broadway is required to cast ‘equity actors,’” Associate Producer Ryan Norton said. “So the level of performers that Tuacahn now attracts is not only Broadway talent, but everyone will have experience behind them of actually performing on Broadway or has National Tour credit.”

Now that this year’s selections for the season are complete, actors reported to Tuacahn for their first rehearsal on Monday.  They will spend the next six months dazzling audiences in the 2,000-seat Tuacahn Amphitheatre.

“The auditions time is an amazing process to be part of,” Anderson said. “We get to see some of America’s finest theatre talent and then bring them back to Tuacahn for our audiences to enjoy.”
