Man charged with stealing $9,000 from deceased man’s bank account

ST. GEORGE – A 41-year-old man was arrested by police last week on 10 counts of alleged forgery. It was the third time the man had been arrested in just a few days.

A 79-year-old woman contacted police about withdrawals exceeding $9,000 that had been made from a checking account she shared with her son who had died in July 2014. The withdrawals, 20 in all, happened from July 2014 to December 2014, according to a probable cause statement written by St. George Police Officer Wyatt Miles.

Withdrawals appeared to be made in the signature of the woman’s deceased son. The woman learned that one of the withdrawals was for a check written out to and endorsed by Jerimy Chadburn, of Veyo.

The woman began to suspect Chadburn was the one making the withdrawals as Chadburn had lived with her son before he died and would have been able to gain access to the checks, according to the probable cause statement.

Chadburn was already in jail for a prior warrant arrest conducted on March 20.

While still in jail,  police interviewed Chadburn on March 23 concerning an incident where he allegedly took two firearms from a residence and pawned them.

Miles visited Chadburn in the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility on March 24 to interview him about the account withdrawals. The interview didn’t last long as Chadburn requested a lawyer when the officer told him his Miranda rights.

Chadburn was additionally charged with 10 counts of third-degree forgery and one count of second-degree felony theft of a car or firearm. His bail pending trial in this case has been set at $60,000 according to court records.

In relation to the March 23 arrest, Chadburn was subsequently arrested and charged with one count of second-degree felony burglary of a dwelling, two second-degree felonies for theft, and two third-degree felonies for possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person. Bail for Chadburn’s March 23 arrest was set at $30,000, according to court records.

Chadburn had a scheduled appearance in 5th District Court Monday.
